Who are Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists
(also known as perinatologists)
A maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialist, also known as a perinatologist, is a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology with advanced training in the management of high-risk pregnancies due to medical risks to the mother or fetus. An MFM specialist cares for pregnant women with chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, and monitors women who develop complications, such as early labor, during pregnancy. An MFM specialist may also be involved in the care of women expecting twins, triplets (multiples) or more. Our MFM specialists act as consultants, co-managing your pregnancy along with your primary OB doctor, delivering services such as advanced ultrasound and genetic consultation, pre-conception counseling and may be involved in planning and care from the time a woman is considering pregnancy through the growth and development of her family. At Fort Worth Perinatal Associates, our five physicians and three midwife medical providers possess over a century of combined experience in the management of high risk pregnancies. Each of our providers keep themselves up to date on all the latest research, developments and treatments involving the most advanced care of you and your baby.
An advanced practitioner, midwife, may also assist in the management of a high-risk patient. In collaboration with our MFMs, the advanced practitioner may be available to answer patient questions and provide care and education during office visits.
If your baby requires neonatal consultation before delivery or specialized care after delivery, or is sent to the neonatal intensive care unit, our practice can arrange for a consultation with a neonatologists. We can also schedule an appointment with a pediatric cardiologist or developmental pediatrician before birth if necessary. Our model of medicine involves maternal-fetal specialists and advanced practitioners who reach out to neonatologists and specialty pediatricians as needed, allowing for seamless communication and care among physicians for you and your child.
